Susanna Reid has followed up her extraordinary row with Matt Hancock on yesterday’s Good Morning Britain on today’s edition.
In the ITV1 studio today, Susanna and co-host Piers Morgan welcomed Kevin Maguire, from the Mirror, onto the show for an interview.
They discussed Matt Hancock’s appearance on GMB on Tuesday, when he said his team should be “thanked” by the public for their handling of the crisis.
Kevin said: “When he says ‘praise my team’, he is actually saying ‘praise me, I am the captain of the team, I am the manager’. It is a humble brag. When he says ‘praise my team’, he is really saying ‘praise me’.”
“There is a word for it in psychology and it is called gaslighting,” said Susanna.
“It is when everybody knows something to be true and somebody says it simply is not true because it serves their purpose to deny it.”
On Tuesday, the Health Secretary was grilled by Piers and Susanna over PPE shortages.
“There were shortages locally but there was no national shortage because of the work my team did and I back them 100%,” Mr Hancock said.
The Health Secretary then sighed as Susanna interjected to challenge him on the matter, to which an annoyed Piers asked: “Why do you sound so exasperated?”
Mr Hancock then snapped back at the pair of hosts: “I sound exasperated for two reasons Piers, one because I think we should be on this programme thanking my team, they work so hard.”
“Really?” a vexed Piers said.
